What can 3D printing do for you?

The novelty of 3D printing makes for a fun hobby for some and an industry imperative for others. In the last month we have had members and campers in our MAKE Camp print keychains, chess pieces, and figurines. One of our Maker Fellowship students delved into CAD and designed a compost bin. It’s worth noting that the bin looks like R2D2, is comprised of six separate parts, and measures 12 inches tall. Recently, another member stepped in to learn about the process and the possibility of printing a maquette of a product she is developing. The latter example of prototyping is in line with 3D-printing’s industry application.

Located in a historic 1802 Schoolhouse, our space is divided into two wings. One for learning and prototyping, and one for coworking and business incubation. Our membership comes from a wide variety of backgrounds that all consider themselves some measure of hacker, maker, and doer. I am an architect. We have entrepreneurs, business people, teachers, engineers, designers, artists, and Jacks and Jill’s of all trades, and of course many software and hardware developers.
