Meet Austin New! He’s a positive fellow!

1: How did you come to be a member of

I wandered into the old location from the street while looking for a place to eat. A hackathon on Meetup brought me back for some pizza and programming, and after a few more times like that I became a member.

2: Describe the moment you decided what you wanted to do when you grew up?

Deciding what to do? Growing up? Who do you think I am!? Seriously, though. I’ve always had some relatively meta interests and not a lot of specific ones. I like simple organization and a certain level of rigor. I like the expression of story in objects. I like to let things grow whether they’re growing from a seed, a startup, an AI program, or a student. I naturally excel at personal growth — in learning and building my intuition — and I’ve always tried to balance that with the ability to quantify and compare things scientifically. This set of interests is definitely not unique, but they’re mine and my goal is always to work on them.

3: What do you do in your current work?

I build software. That’s for websites right now, but in the past it has been for data analytics and artificial intelligence programs.

4: What is an expertise you have that you would like to share with others?

Whatever the other person wants to have shared with them. If I’m lacking the experience or self-realization, they’re out of luck, but I’m a pretty good and fast learner and anything the other person wants to learn I would love to learn with them.

5: What are you tinkering with at the moment?

I have been doing a lot of planting and cooking. I have a 0.1g kitchen scale coming in the mail right now so I can make good espresso and mixed drinks. Maybe I’ll set the software to the side for a while and open a farm to table restaurant! On the technology side, I have an old phone that I hope to turn into to a smart monitor for the garden. I know I’ll be able to make timelapses of the garden growing, but I’d really like to find the ground saturation, identify pests, pick out how quickly individual plants are growing, spot diseases, and the rest from a photo stream.

6: What are you interested in learning?

Really anything, excepting pop culture references. I’ll be bad at jokes or something.

7: What is your favorite sci-fi movie? (warning:spoiler)

I really liked Interstellar. Indomitable space cowboy saves humanity through 5 dimensional travel and control of dark matter. Hard to beat. The issues of earth and promise of another planet were dramatically simplified, but that just leaves room for a sequel, right?

8: If you have not lived all of your life in Augusta, where else have you lived?I’ve lived all around the southeast, but I’m from Canton, Ga: home to many horses and almost as many people.9: If you could see one thing happen in Augusta in the next 5 – 10 years, what would it be?

I would see that places like the Innovation Academy keep on growing. Ten years of growth would be massive.

10: Core Values are: Risk Boldly, Honor Your Commitments, Be Worthy of Trust, Give More Than You Take, and Share Solutions. Which core value do you best exemplify and why?

Give More Trust Than You Share Solutions; Boldly Risk Your Commitments? I don’t know. Maybe we can sit down and talk about it.

Located in a historic 1802 Schoolhouse, our space is divided into two wings. One for learning and prototyping, and one for coworking and business incubation. Our membership comes from a wide variety of backgrounds that all consider themselves some measure of hacker, maker, and doer. I am an architect. We have entrepreneurs, business people, teachers, engineers, designers, artists, and Jacks and Jill’s of all trades, and of course many software and hardware developers.
