Scott Hardigree spends nearly everyday working out of theClubhou.se, and has been since he joined back on Broad Street. With a knack for business and a jovial nature, Scott is an integral part of what makes theClubhou.se a collaborative workspace, especially within our weekly Founder’s Circle. Scott took a minute to provide us some insight to his business.
What is the business?
Email Industries is comprised of three offerings which, as probably guessed, are all focused on email marketing.
Indiemark is a full-service email marketing agency that provides enterprises and middle-market companies with strategic as well as creative and technical services.
BlackBox is a one of kind predictive abuse-prevention solution for email service providers.
Alfred Knows is a joint venture with a fellow email geek which helps marketers find reliable and affordable email verification service providers.
When did you found it?
Indiemark, our first offering, was founded in 2008 in Orlando. BlackBox was born in 2010 and Alfred Knows only went live last week.
Where is the business now?
It’s been nearly five years since I relocated the family and business to Augusta. We’ve been set up at theClubhou.se almost since its inception.
What were you like in school?
I barely made it out of Fernandina Beach High School although I must say that my surfing and skating game was quite strong. It wasn’t until my time at Augusta College / Augusta State University that I knew what it felt like to be successful. That experience changed everything for me.
Any early experiences/skills that (with hindsight) influenced your career path?
I remember trying to make sense of TV commercials when I was a kid; “Why are those teenagers playing with Matchbox cars?” is one question that sticks out in my mind. I guess I was critiquing their ad agency’s choices or perhaps scrutinizing their tactics.
Any previous entrepreneurial experience? Lessons learnt?
Email Industries is the third company I’ve founded and operated since 1999. Through those experiences I’ve learned a lot about people and myself but mostly I learned that I don’t know anything.
What appealed to you about entrepreneurship?
Nothing. It was never my dream to start much less run a string of businesses. I took one risky step and one thing led to another. I can’t imagine doing anything else now.
How has your approach to business progressed over time?
My first business was an interactive agency, what today you’d call a digital agency. Frankly, I just emulated what other guys were doing and tried to do it in a way that worked with my style of doing business.
Indiemark, which was the first dedicated email marketing agency, was a bit different. Since then I‘ve continued down the email-niche path so I suppose my progress has been focused on being hyper-focused, first-to-market and unique. It works for me.
How did you market your business?
Believe it or not our early growth is 100% attributable to Twitter. Back then the email marketing community and marketplace was small so it was easy to cut through the noise and make business friends, those friends who become referral partners. Nowadays, we’re reaping the multi-year investments we’ve made into content marketing, organic search and networking.
